The wooden pagodas from the Buddhist temples are always on my list when I visit Japan. I just love their distinct and beautiful architecture and I have now a sizable collection of pagoda photos…
But there is another type of pagoda, with a very different look - the stone pagoda. Like the wooden ones, the stone pagodas are also made with an odd number of stories (between 3 and 13), but they are a lot smaller: the tallest stone pagoda from Japan (in Nara, at Hannya-ji) has a height of 14 meters, while the usual ones are only about 3 meters tall, so they look more like garden decoration.
Here is a good example, on the left of the photo there’s a 13-story stone pagoda placed in a wonderful setting, at the Jourenji Temple from Itabashi, Tokyo.
