Like the tahōtō pagoda, hōtō ("jewel stupa") is a style of pagoda invented in Japan during the Heian Period. The hōtō architecture consists in a cylindrical body placed on a pedestal, with a square roof and a sorin on top.
Usually these are small constructions, built of stone or metal, so a wooden architectural jewel like the one from this photo (taken at Jouren-ji Temple, Itabashi, Tokyo) is a very rare sight.
