Zen garden patterns, the Water Drop Wave

The second part of the series on “Zen garden patterns“

Since the water in the Karesansui Zen gardens is represented only by raked sand and gravel, it is possible to suggest moments frozen in time, like vortices or drop waves.

In today’s photo, taken at the Tofuku-ji Temple from Kyoto, you can admire one of the hardest to draw such “frozen” patterns, the water drop wave - in Japanese maru‐uzu-mon [丸渦紋]. The circles are perfect and if you stare long enough, the effect is almost hypnotic…
