There are over 6000 kōban all over Japan and some of them are really famous. There are such police boxes with real historical value, like the oldest kōban from Tokyo, while others are well known because of their unusual architecture, like the kōban from Asakusa, inspired by a Shinto shrine, or the kōban from Ikebukuro and the one from Chiba, which were designed to look like… an owl.
But some of them are famous because they have been featured in… movies or in manga. This is the case with the kōban from Kameari, in Katsushika, Tokyo, which was described in the manga “Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo” by Osamu Akimoto. Many fans are coming here, taking their pictures in front of this police box… I wonder what the policemen are thinking… (^_^)
