After a fire destroyed in 1759 most of the Kanazawa castle, a few buildings, some gates and walls were rebuilt, but the tenshu tower was never reconstructed. The buildings burned again in 1808, they were again rebuilt but were destroyed again by a fire in 1881.
The reconstruction of the castle started recently, by using the plans from the end of the Edo period, and by using original materials and traditional construction methods. The rebuilt Hishi Yagura, photographed here, was made to look as it was during the middle of the 19th century.
