Matsuo Basho frog statue

Mon, September 24, 2018, by Muza-chan

About a century ago the place where the poet Matsuo Bashō lived when he wrote his famous frog haiku was almost forgotten. But 200 years after his time, after a tsunami, a frog statue was found in Morishita, south of Fukagawa, Tokyo, and since it was known that the statue was a gift received by the poet from a disciple, the residents built there an Inari shrine and displayed the statue inside.

The statue and the wooden shrine were destroyed by the bombings at the end of WWII, but it was later rebuilt, together with a replica of the statue.
