At the end of the Edo period, the Uchiko town (in the Shikoku Island) was benefiting from its geographical location, being at the same time a hub for water and for land transportation. In addition, Uchiko was an important center for the production of traditional wax, and for high quality Japanese paper (washi).
As a result, Uchiko was one of the most prosperous towns on the island, and fortunately for us it was beautifully preserved, being today one of the must see historical places in Shikoku.
