Samurai helmet, Kawari Kabuto

Thu, March 6, 2014, by Muza-chan

Although primarily designed for protection in battle, the samurai armor was also a status symbol, so the quality of the materials and the aesthetic of decoration wasn’t neglected. The armor of the important commanders was clearly distinguishable in the battle, being strongly individualized…

The design of the helmet was the most often personalized item and some samurai have resorted to really extravagant solutions. Called kawari kabuto - “strange helmets", many such helmets were adorned with large decorations made of papier-mâché, wood, leather or metal, to make the wearer appear taller and scarier…
What do you think about the helmet in this photo? Was it frightening, ridiculous… or both?
