The Niigata city is located at the mouth of the Shinano River, the longest and widest river in Japan. Flowing into the Sea of Japan, the river brought many advantages to the city, allowing transportation of goods from the port of Niigata to the central areas. At the end of Edo period, when Japan started international trading, Niigata became one of the 5 major Japanese ports.
In the photo you can see the 125-meters-tall Bandaijima skyscraper, which features a 360 degree observatory overlooking the mouth of the Shinano River.
