The Shitennoji in Osaka is Japan’s oldest official temple, dedicated to Shitennō, the Four Heavenly Kings, a group of four Buddhist gods also known as the Guardians of the Four Compass Directions. The dedication comes from very old times, from the legendary Prince Shōtoku, who established the temple to thank the gods for the help received during a battle.
