Japanese superlatives - Spectacles Bridge, the oldest stone arch bridge

Sat, February 22, 2014, by Muza-chan

Built in 1634, the Meganebashi [眼鏡橋] “Spectacles Bridge” from Nagasaki is the oldest stone arch bridge in Japan and, even if it suffered some damage over the time, still maintains its original appearance. The unusual name comes from the reflection created in the water, which as you can see in the photo, looks like a pair of glasses.

Although it is located quite far from the Kofuku-ji Temple, the Spectacles Bridge was built by the temple’s abbot, the Zen master Mokusu Nyojo, to facilitate the access to the temple.
