Built 400 years ago for the residence of Kato Kiyomasa, one of the most powerful samurai at the end of the Sengoku Jidai, the New Otani garden maintained until today a large part of its original design.

Renovated after the WWII, the garden became known by the current name after it was bought by Yonetaro Otani, who erected here, at the request of the Japanese government, the New Otani hotel for the Tokyo Olympic Games of 1964.
