Tokyo Tsukishima old and new buildings

Built at the end of the 19th century on reclaimed land, the Tsukishima Island is one of the few Tokyo districts that preserves a part of the old time atmosphere, because Tsukishima remained largely unaffected by the Great Kanto Earthquake, and also survived to the WWII bombings.

At the beginning of the 1990s, a large modernization project took place here, but only on the northern side, where several high-rise buildings where erected. Today, Tsukishima presents an architectural combination of old and new, an image illustrative for many Japanese cities, conservative and modern at the same time…
