The traditional Japanese home was made only from natural raw materials, without iron nails or glass windows. Probably the best known traditional element is Shoji, a screen and room divider which is also used as sliding door or window, made of wooden frames covered with semi-opaque washi (Japanese traditional paper).
Another element is Fusuma, a sliding panel which is also made of wood covered by opaque paper and textile materials. The floor is covered by tatami straw mats. Such a house is very pleasant to live in, being at the same time resilient and light, with good earthquake resistance.
