Tsuzumimon, the spectacular gate from Kanazawa

One of the most spectacular gates from Japan can be found not in the front of a temple or shrine, but in front of… a train station. Tsuzumimon was built right in front of the East entrance to the JR Kanazawa Station and it is directly connected to a huge steel-and-glass structure, the Motenashi Dome.

The gate’s architecture draws its inspiration from a Japanese traditional drum called tsuzumi (hence the name), and surprisingly, although it was finished in 2005, Tsuzumimon is almost entirely made of wood, which gives a beautiful color and a very pleasant feeling…
