The architect of the Uwajima castle was Tōdō Takatora, a daimyō with a great experience in building and repairing castles. His castels were designed to take full advantage of the terrain and in the case of the Uwajima castle the main keep (tenshu) was built on the top of a steep hill, surrounded by tall stone walls.

The keep was built in s style called sotogata, considered to be the invention of Takatora, with the floors having the same shape, but each story being smaller than the one bellow it. It was cheaper and faster to build a castle in this way, and the construction was also more resistant..
