With a total height of 14.98 meters, the statue of Vairocana Buddha in Nara was, when it was built, the largest bronze statue in the world.
At this statue took place the first kaigen kuyou statue consacration in Japan. Meaning literally “eye-opening", the ceremony consist in painting the pupils of the eyes of the Buddha.
