The complex of the Risshaku-ji temple, better known as Yamadera (meaning “mountain temple") was established by Jikaku Daishi, as a branch temple of the Enryaku-ji on Mt. Hiei near Kyoto.
The temple got its nickname because its buildings, from the main hall located on top to the pavilions spread on the steep slopes, are covering a large portion of the mountain.
