Even during the peak era of castle-building in Japan, the castles colored in black were rare. Only two of them survived until today, Matsumoto in Nagano and Matsue in Shimane. The oldest of them, Matsumoto-jō was built in 1503 and was nicknamed Karasu-jō, “Crow Castle".
