A Photowalk in the Great Hell, Owakudani

After enjoying the trip with the Hakone pirate ships, from Motohakone-ko to Togendai I took the Hakone Ropeway…

… and after a few minutes climb to the altitude of 1044 meters, I arrived in… O-jigoku - Great Hell. :)

O-jigoku is a crater formed by a huge phreatic explosion occurred during the last eruption of Mount Hakone, 3000 years ago.
It is currently known as O-wakudani, the Great Boiling Valley. The current name was chosen in 1876, before a visit by the Emperor Meiji, because the O-jigoku (Great Hell) name was deemed inauspicious for the visit of the Emperor.

După ce m-am distrat călătorind cu corabia piraţilor pe lacul Ashi, de la Motohakone-ko la Togendai, am luat telecabina (Hakone Ropeway)…

… şi după ce am urcat câteva minute, până la altitudinea de 1044 metri, m-am trezit în… O-jigoku (Marele Iad). :)

O-jigoku este un crater care s-a format acum 3000 de ani la erupţia Muntelui Hakone. În prezent zona este cunoscută însă cu numele de Owakudani, Marea Vale care Fierbe.
Noul nume a fost dat înainte de vizita Împăratului Meiji din 1876, pentru că s-a considerat că un loc cu asemenea denumire este nepotrivit pentru vizita Împăratului.
