Some decorative parts of the kabuto samurai helmet were indeed just for decor, as is the case for the kawari kabuto “strange helmets”.
But in some cases, the decorations were also playing an important protective role. Fukigaeshi, the two protuberances on the sides of the helmet, usually decorated with the owner’s kamon, were actually designed to stop the enemy’s sword from reaching the neck area…
