Wandering (as usual…) through Asakusa, a little north of Senso-ji Temple, I discovered this splendid daibutsu. It is called Kuhon-ji Daibutsu (the Great Buddha of Kuhon-ji Temple) and it was made in 1660, as a memorial for those who died in in 1657 in the Great Fire of Meireki (also known as the Furisode Fire). The fire was so strong that it lasted for 3 days and about 100000 people died…
Funded with donations raised by the chief priest of the temple, the statue was made by the artist Hasegawa Masutsugu:
