Old and new architecture in Gion, Kyoto

Mon, May 19, 2014, by Muza-chan

An interesting combination of Japanese traditional architecture and modern design recently delighted me in Kyoto, while strolling on the Higashi Oji-dori, right across the Yasaka Shrine.

The building on the right, housing the Ki-Yan Stuzio project of a well known Kyoto artist, Hideki Kimura, is a traditional house, modified with large, vivid colored windows, with a stylish touch given by the round marumado-like windows… It makes a perfect match with the adjacent building, which is also an old-styled house, modernized with wide windows (probably replacing the mushiko mado) and modern lanterns.
