Most Shinto shrines are dedicated to one or more deities (kami), but there’s also a special category dedicated to great personalities or to honor the victims of wars. They are called Gokoku and are considered shrines for the protection of the nation.
The somber but beautiful Gokoku Shrine of Hiroshima, photographed here, was originally built in 1869, to honor the members of the Hiroshima clan who lost their life during the Boshin civil war.
