One of the most recent constructions of this kind, the Shōwa Daibutsu ("Great Buddha") of the Seiryū-ji temple in Aomori is the tallest seated bronze figure of Buddha in Japan (21.35 meters, taller than the Nara Great Buddha and the Kamakura Daibutsu).
The statue represents Dainichi Buddha (Vairocana in Sanscrit), the Buddha of Cosmic Life, the central figure in the mandalas of the Shingon Sect of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism.
