What to see in Tokyo - Life-size Gundam is back for good in Odaiba

Sat, May 12, 2012, by Muza-chan

After the huge success from 2009, when the life-size statue of the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam was first built in the Shiokaze Park in Odaiba, Tokyo - then the statue attracted over 4 million visitors in only 52 days - the Gundam was dismantled and many of my readers were hoping that the giant robot will be reinstalled again somewhere.

One year later, the statue briefly reappeared in Shizuoka, but then it was again dismantled and disappeared from public attention. However, the last winter, the great Gundam raised again in Odaiba, in a new location not far from the first place, in front of the brand new Diver City Tokyo Plaza shopping mall.

I took this photo in January, when the construction was still going on, but it was already visible that the new installment is an improved version of the 2009 statue: this is presented as the RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. GFT, with new decals and even more detailed parts! From what I learned, the Gundam’s ankles, knees and elbows were detailed to resemble the “magnetic coating” from the Anime series.

And just a few weeks ago, inside the Diver City was inaugurated the Gundam Front Tokyo, a place with many Gundam related attractions. Of course, that goes straight on my “to visit in Tokyo” list!
