Originally a two-story wooden construction erected after the war and rebuilt during the 1950s, the Radio Kaikan building became one of the symbols of the Akihabara “Electric Town”. For me, it was the very first store I visited in Akihabara, back in 2007 (here’s a photo of the vivid colored Radio Kaikan back in 2008)…
However, in 2011 this old building was demolished, and since several skyscrapers raised up during the last decade (Akihabara Crossfield in 2005 and Sumitomo Fudosan Akihabara in 2009), it seemed that the old, colorful style of Akihabara was slowly disappearing…
I felt quite nostalgic (I even wrote an article about the old Radio Kaikan), but when the new Radio Kaikan was completed in 2014, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the old design was somehow preserved (especially the colors), of course with the addition of several floors.
