Arguably the most spectacular castle in Japan, Himeji-jō is also the only Japanese castle registered on the list of World Heritage Sites. Inscribed in 1993, at the same time with the Buddhist monuments in Horyu-ji, Himeji-jō is actually a huge complex, including 83 structures.
Considered the pinnacle of the Japanese castle architecture in wood, all of its buildings are perfectly preserving, both inside and outside, their original, 17th century splendor.
