The first skyscraper from Nishi-Shinjuku ("Shinjuku-West"), the Keio Plaza Hotel, was built in 1971. 3 more followed in 1974: Shinjuku Sumitomo Building, Shinjuku Mitsui Building and Shinjuku KDDI Building. By 1991, when the Tokyo Metropolitan Government was built, there were already 17 skyscrapers and the most recent one was finished in 2008, Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower.
Nishi-Shinjuku is already the area with the highest concentration of skyscrapers in Tokyo, but the development won’t stop here: according to a new project, Nishi-Shinjuku 3-Chōme Redevelopment (which was supposed to start in 2010), 4 more buildings will rise here, including the East Office Tower which, with 338 meters (77 floors), will be the new tallest building in Japan, surpassing the Yokohama Landmark Tower.
There are several locations from where you can admire the group of skyscrapers from Nishi-Shinjuku, but my favorite is the top of the Mori Tower from Roppongi Hills.
Here’s what you can see from the roof deck:
